EMDR

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy in Edmonton.

What is EMDR?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is a structured form of psychotherapy originally developed to help people heal from trauma and distressing life experiences. It’s best known for treating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), but it’s also used for anxiety, phobias, grief, and other emotional difficulties.

The Core Idea

Traumatic or overwhelming events can sometimes get “stuck” in the brain in an unprocessed form—almost like a memory that never fully healed. When triggered, these memories can feel just as distressing as when the event first happened.

EMDR helps reprocess those memories so they become less emotionally charged and easier to live with.

How EMDR Works

  • History & Preparation – The therapist learns about your background and explains the process, teaching coping skills to ensure you feel safe.
  • Targeting a Memory – You bring to mind a distressing memory, along with the related thoughts, emotions, and body sensations.
  • Bilateral Stimulation – While focusing on the memory, the therapist guides you through left-right stimulation (often eye movements, taps, or sounds).
    • This alternating stimulation seems to help the brain “digest” and reprocess the memory.
  • Reprocessing – Over time, the memory feels less intense. Instead of reliving the trauma, you remember it as something from the past.
  • Installation of Positive Beliefs – The therapist helps you replace negative thoughts (e.g., “I’m powerless”) with healthier, more realistic ones (e.g., “I survived, and I am strong”).

What EMDR Helps With

  • PTSD and trauma
  • Anxiety and panic attacks
  • Phobias
  • Grief and loss
  • Chronic pain and medical trauma
  • Low self-esteem or negative self-beliefs

What It Feels Like

During EMDR, you stay awake and in control—it’s not hypnosis. People often describe it as emotionally intense, but also relieving, because the brain finally gets a chance to “file away” a memory properly.

In short: EMDR helps people heal from trauma by using guided eye movements or other bilateral stimulation to reprocess painful memories, so they lose their emotional intensity and no longer control daily life.

EMDR in Counselling

Individual Counselling

Individual counselling (sometimes called therapy or one-on-one counselling) is a process where a person meets privately with a trained mental health professional to explore their thoughts, feelings, behaviours, and challenges.

At its core, it provides a safe, confidential space to talk about what’s going on in your life and to work toward personal growth, healing, or problem-solving.

Individual counselling is like having a trained guide walk beside you while you work through lifes struggles, offering insight, strategies, and support along the way.
